Leadership Development and Biblical Guidance Process
The Tshwane Church of Christ is located in Tshwane, South Africa, on the southern part of the African continent. Our history traces back to the establishment of the Johannesburg Church of Christ in 1986. Shortly thereafter, the Pretoria congregation was formed as a region of the Johannesburg Church. For many years, the Pretoria region operated under the Johannesburg Church of Christ. In 2019, it was officially planted as an independent congregation and became the Tshwane International Church of Christ. The name reflects the city’s transition from Pretoria to Tshwane following South Africaโs governmental changes in 1994, with Pretoria remaining a suburb within the greater City of Tshwane. Today, the Tshwane Church of Christ continues to serve as a vibrant community of disciples committed to following Jesus Christ. We share the common faith, beliefs, and mission of the Churches of Christ, emphasizing repentance, baptism in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and a life devoted to God.

Request for Biblical Guidance
As part of our goal to appoint Elders and a Lead Evangelist, the church requested biblical guidance from a team of teachers regarding leadership appointments in a congregation that currently has neither Elders nor a Lead Evangelist. Specifically, the church sought clarity on:
- The biblical process for appointing Elders and a Lead Evangelist.
- The role Candidate Elders may play during the appointment process.
- Whether there is a biblical distinction between appointing a Lead Evangelist directly or selecting one through a broader process.
- Who should oversee the appointment of Elders in the absence of existing Elders.
- Whether both appointment processes could proceed concurrently.

Teachers’ Response
The Teachers’ Task Team responded by emphasizing that their role is to provide biblical teaching rather than prescribe specific leadership outcomes. They concluded that before leadership appointments are considered, the church should focus on strengthening its spiritual foundation, healing relationships, building unity, and clarifying leadership principles.
The response identified several areas requiring attention, including:
- Spiritual growth and discipleship.
- Leadership challenges and role clarity.
- Unity, trust, and reconciliation.
- Effective communication and decision-making.
- A shared biblical understanding of leadership.
To support this process, the teachers proposed a phased teaching journey focused on:
- Identity in Christ.
- Spiritual maturity and unity.
- Humility, forgiveness, and reconciliation.
- Biblical leadership principles.
- Roles and responsibilities within the church.
- Building trust and healthy leadership teams
